A pleasant surprise for his final days in office, Bush has established three new national monuments in the Pacific Ocean, setting aside for permanent protection pristine coral reefs, the world’s deepest underwater canyon and marine environments teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, manta rays and giant clams. This announcement follows Bush’s similar action in 2006 to establish a new monument in the northern Hawaiian islands. Combined with the new monuments, Bush has now protected more ocean area than any president in history.<\/p>\n

The new national monuments include the seven-mile-deep Mariana Trench near Guam, and a tiny Palmyra Atoll 1,000 miles south of Hawaii. Though they are thousands of miles from the California coast, they have close links with Bay Area marine scientists, who cheered the news.<\/p>\n

"These places are like time machines. They provide us a window as to how oceans looked prior to many negative of the impacts of human activities,"<\/strong><\/em> said Healy Hamilton, an evolutionary biologist with the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

"It’s one of the most important moves in marine conservation in recent decades."<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Though the oceans are in peril, there is hope on the horizon as people are starting to realize we have to start protecting one of the largest and most beautiful resources we have – the sea.<\/p>\n
