Next time you’re out at DIA, check out the new solar inverters installed this year, which will generate more than 3 million kWh a year, reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere by more than 6.3 million pounds each year.

In early September 2009, Worldwater & Solar Technologies, designed, built, and now operates the DIA system, which uses more than 9,200 Sharp solar panels. Different from static, rooftop systems, these ground-mounted solar arrays use a single-axis tracking system that follows the sun during the day for greater efficiency and energy production. This large solar PV installation occupys 7.5 acres – equivalent to the size of seven football fields. MMA Renewable Ventures owns the PV system and sells electricity to DIA under a multi-year agreement. The 2-megawatt system was constructed without investing taxpayer dollars by using a third-party financing and a power purchase agreement.

The two megawatt photovoltaic system is the second largest solar power system at an airport in North America. In eight years, DIA will have an option to purchase the PV system from MMA.

“A major transportation hub like Denver International Airport has complex power demands. Our expertise in design and installation, coupled with high quality products like Xantrex inverters, enable us to tackle these projects and make commercial solar systems sustainable options for large-scale operations.”

– Dr. Frank Smith, CEO of WorldWater
